Although it’s everyone’s dream trip to go away and watch MotoGP – and there’s certainly a lot to be said for that – we’re also big advocates of some other series where fans can go and watch great racing and see MotoGP stars in the making.
We’ve already written much about FIM CEV Repsol, now very much a de facto feeder series to the World Championships and the proving ground for many stars and champions, but there’s also another CEV that can make for an excellent trip away if you like to go and watch highly competitive racing and to have a great time while you’re doing it.
We’re talking about RFME CEV – the Campeonato de España Cetelem de Velocidad – a multi-category series, not dissimilar to the CEV Repsol that you may be more familiar with, but also with plenty going for it to recommend to race fans from the UK. Unlike CEV Repsol which is run by Dorna, this series is run by the Spanish RFME – (Real Federacion Motociclista Española), and has a slightly more national than international feel to it, although there are plenty of international entries across the categories.
The categories themselves favour a broader intake, and also more of an affordable and entry level opportunity for riders and teams, including the likes of 85GP and Moto4, a Pre-Moto3 class, and ‘Open’ classes for their Superstock 600 and 1000 categories.
The categories are all pretty competitive, and as well as a healthy range of Spanish talent they also feature riders from across the rest of Europe and as far afield as Australia, China, Japan, the USA, and Canada. Many names will of course be unfamiliar – but by no means all, and you can see more well-known riders like Kev Coghlan, Lukas Tulovich, Carmelo Morales – and many who appear in various other championships.
There are quite a few familiar team names in the paddock too: Monlau, Fau55, EasyRace, Real Avintia, Wimu, Angel Nieto, Cuna de Campeones, XCTech, and more.
One of the greatest things about RFME CEV (and also CEV Repsol) is the completely free entry. It is genuinely free to all – and not only that, it is also a completely open paddock – so you can pretty much go watch the action from wherever you like across the weekend, and also wander around the paddock to your heart’s content. This is particularly appealing if you like to meet riders – as they have a really good visibility due to the fact that many actually stay in the paddock, so it’s their home and workplace for each round; more so even than CEV Repsol and perhaps something that feels a bit more like the UK’s various national championships.
The RFME CEV season is spread out, like CEV Repsol – across some excellent Spanish circuits including Valencia, Jerez, Albacete, Aragon, Barcelona and Navarra.
It all makes for great viewing – and whilst you admittedly need to travel further afield than for a ‘home’ round of MotoGP or WorldSBK in the United Kingdom, there are balances to all this. Some of the venues are really easy to get to on budget or low-cost airlines – Valencia and Barcelona for example – and as these are non Grand Prix weekends you’ll find hotels a lot more available, including ones nearer the tracks, and generally more affordable too.
Add to that Spain’s mostly excellent weather and the off-track relaxing you can enjoy with great locations and some fantastic food and drink, and it can make for a really different, good value, long race weekend break that is a whole new experience – centred on great on-track action and the pleasure of seeing up and coming talent – and stars of the future making their mark on the international stage.
