In the three categories there were potential Championship deciding outcomes, but two dramatic crashes on the last laps of both the 125GP and Extreme/Moto2 races have deferred the decision of the respective titles until the final round in Valencia.

In the 125GP, French rider Johann Zarco imposed his experience of riding in the World Championship to overcome Portuguese rider Miguel Oliveira and Japanese rider Hiroki Ono. Alberto Moncayo had to finish ahead of Maverick Viñales to obtain the Championship. With the race perfectly controlled and Patrick Jacobsen leading the Catalan rider, Jacobsen fell on the last lap, rolling into Moncayo who had to retire. Viñales finished fourth, meaning Moncayo arrives in Valencia with an 11-point advantage in the Championship.

The script, worthy of a film thriller, was repeated in the Extreme/Moto2 race. At the start, Bernat Martínez played his only card, which was to go for the race win. In contrast, Iván Silva made another bad start, finishing the first lap in eighth place. Javier Del Amor was in front of Martínez and seemed set to win his first race of the year. Morales was not willing to give up and both exchanged positions continually while Silva continued a great comeback as he made contact with the lead group.
On the final lap, Del Amor broke hard and clashed with Morales, who did not crash but lost his chance of winning, and must wait until Valencia to be crowned Champion. The highest-placed privateer was Extreme rider Santiago Barragán.

Graeme Gowland made a return to the Spanish Championship at the weekend when he teamed up once again with the Honda Joe Darcey Team, with whom he won the 2007 Spanish Supersport Championship, who are working together with FTR (Fabrication Techniques Racing) to produce a race-winning Moto2 contender. Moto2 is the all-new race class in MotoGP next year, replacing the 250’s, with the machines being race prototypes.

The penultimate round of the Spanish Championship was held at the Jerez circuit in the south of the country where Gowla finished an impressive fourth in the Moto2 class and thirteenth overall against a field of 1000cc Extreme bikes.
This was the first full race for the FTR Moto2 machine and Gowla finished just 3.5 secs behind the first-placed Moto2 machine after 17 laps of the 2.752-mile circuit and ahead of current Grand Prix rider Joan Olive.

“I’m really pleased with the way the FTR machine went in the race. I managed to get through the field a bit in the first half of the race and was hoping to finish even higher but as the tyres became worn then the characteristic of the machine changed” said Gowland.
“In all I think we have to be happy with what we’ve achieved this weekend. It’s the first time for all of us at Jerez with the machine and my first race weekend with the FTR prototype so the result is pretty good. We’ve learned a lot and further developed the machine so, overall, great progress.”

Gowland was 19th fastest in the opening qualifying session then improved to qualify in 18th and in the race he further improved his lap time from qualifying by 0.2s.
Graeme will be in action again this coming weekend at the Valencia circuit when the Championship draws to a close.

FTR director Steve Bones said: “We’re over the moon with just how far we’ve come in such a short space of time.
“Graeme did the perfect job this weekend and it’s credit to him and the Joe Darcey Team that we’re able to move on to Valencia now with plenty of optimism.
“The interest in the machine has been overwhelming and we’ve quite a few riders now wanting us to organise tests for them so they can give the M209 a run for themselves.”

The pace at the teams home race of Catalunya did not show any signs of slowing down, with the pole position lap being a whole 1.3 seconds faster than ever before round the Montmelo circuit. Kev qualified in third position and was confident of making a good race.

Second into the first corner, things were off to a good start but after dropping to fourth, then to fifth after a near collision at the beginning of lap two, things were becoming very risky. There was a five way battle for the lead which soon dropped to four, all of whom had led the race. It was then down to three with one of the riders crashing out and with all the slipstreaming and hard breaking at this circuit it appeared that nobody could escape at the front.

Kev decided to wait his time and with two laps to go moved through to second place. It was only at this moment did Kev realise that the race leader was farther in front than he had thought and now Kev had a gap of over a second to make up in the final two laps. Kev gave his all, putting in the fastest lap and lap record on the final lap but it was not enough for the victory. He crossed the finish line just 0.2 seconds behind the race winner.

By far the most exciting and hard fought race of the year, Kev was a bit disappointed to have missed out on the top step and by such a small amount but he and the team were pleased with how he rode and that they had pulled farther in front in the championship table.

After the race at Donington Park, Kev had his sights firmly set on picking up his first victory in the Spanish CEV championship. In the first qualifying session Kev was in second position and had just went fastest in the first two sectors of the lap when he crashed out. After high-siding off his bike and landing relatively uninjured, Kev got caught up with the bike breaking the scaphoid bone in his left hand. Kev was forced to sit out the second qualifying session and Sundays morning warm-up but with the help of the medical staff and physiotherapist at the track was able to start the race. With nobody able to better Kev’s qualifying times in second session he would still start from second position.

In the race Kev got a good start and was in second position into the first corner and at the end of the first lap was still holding position. Straight away Kev was putting in fast, consistent lap times and soon began to pull away from the rest of the pack.

By the end of the race Kev was seven seconds behind the leader but an incredible fourteen seconds clear of the third place rider. After the race Kev commented that his wrist had not been as painful as he had expected and although it was uncomfortable he was only really is any pain for the final three or four laps.

The day after the race Kev was operated on in Barcelona to put a screw in the broken wrist and is now preparing to be fully fit for the second half of the season

The second round of the CEV Bukler 2009 series was held last weekend in the circuit of Jerez and the Joe Darcey team and riders were there to give us some great racing. Kev Coghlan, after qualifying on the front row and being fastest in warm-up had high expectations for the race. After not getting a great start Kev was 6th into the first corner but battled through to third by the end of the first lap.

Kev was looking strong to take the fight to Angel Rodriguez, but after a fight with Fores and Bonastre the reigning champion managed to escape once again. Kev managed to break away from the rest of the pack but could not close down Rodrigues. Kev finished second with his first podium of the season with Bonastre in third. Kev already has his sights set on the next race in Valencia in July where he hopes to be challenging for the victory.
